FALL. I’m so so sorry if you are one of those people who could not care less about the change in seasons. But THIS is truly the most wonderful time of the year. The clothes, the colors, the smells, the food—all of it. I am so stoked to style some of the most fun and wearable fall fashion trends for 2018!
While much of what I go into detail about below is currently considered “on trend” right now, I am by no means the type of person who NEEDS to wear what’s hot for a particular season. I definitely stick to what I like and what makes me excited about getting up in the morning and donning a new outfit, as one should. In years past, however, I do not remember being this enthralled with a large majority of what is being presented across fashion mainstream media and street style snapshots. In this post, I explore some of the trends and how I like to weave them into my own wardrobe, and how you can as well. Additionally, I selected a handful of items and accessories for each trend for you to shop and think about hanging in your own closet. Cheers, friends.
I take back everything I said before about cheetah, leopard and snake skin. I’m sorry for what I said before because now I cannot get enough. The great thing about leopard, cheetah and snake-skin print is that you can almost treat it as a neutral. Paired with the right black dress and heels, a printed jacket, sweater or bag could work for the office or the bar afterwards. I’m dying to get my hands on some super rad, flared snake-skin print pants…excuse me while I overfill my online shopping carts.
GLEN PLAID, HOUNDSTOOTH & HERRINGBONE
These patterns are often written off into the work wear category by the masses, and thus deemed too professional or “9-5” for say weekend wear. Alas, many designers this season have encouraged incorporation of these very much work wear styles into your normal rotation. Take a white tee and jeans and add an oversized, herringbone, structured blazer with heavy black boots for Saturday strolling or a chunky, pointed heel for dinner with a friend. Some of my favorite pieces from this trend are skirts that pair great with over the knee boots (see picture above!) and in unexpected accessories.
Floral dresses with longer hemlines and billowy sleeves initially bored me, but I’ve grown to love them. My favorite thing about wearing this trend is that it actually easily meshes with much of what I already own as well as with more more boho tendencies. Also, you can’t NOT feel like a magical being just frolicking through a garden of sunflowers when you incorporate this style into your wardrobe. Look for patterns that feature more earth tones to better mesh the trend with an autumn color palette. If you’re nervous about diving in head first, look for prairie and floral prints in more modern silhouettes.
SATEMENT COATS & JACKETS
The bigger, the fuzzier, the bolder…the better. A statement coat can take any outfit from great to transformative. They often pull together an entire look or add that one pop that feels vibrant but not overstated. Some of my favorites for this season are bulky blazers and teddy coats. Check out Rent the Runway if you’re looking for a great way to try out different types that work for your closet and personal style (Thank you Mack In Style for showing me the magic that is RTR)! They have an incredible coat selection for their unlimited rental members that I never would be able to afford otherwise.
I really think this season took orange up a notch from prior bright color palettes. I could not be more thrilled that orange is everywhere at the moment because warm-tone colors and makeup looks are my favorite. Mustard yellow is another great option for fall that I have been seeing everywhere in case orange isn’t your cup of tea!
I hope this helped those of you who are looking to refresh your fall wardrobe. Remember that countless looks can be created from one statement piece or splurge purchase. Let me know what you’re loving or totally against for fall fashion trends this year! I’d love to hear from you in the comments or find me on instagram!
