Hello dark lipstick my old friend, we meet again. Today I’m sharing my favorite dark lipsticks for winter! Darker shades of burgundy, plum and chocolate brown all make a statement—plus, add just a bit of moodiness to your look. I’m all for that. Make sure to scroll to the bottom of the post to see one of my favorite tips for making dark lipstick look its absolute best.
[The order of the following list reflects the lipstick swatches in the photo below from top to bottom]
1. Anastasia Beverly Hills Matte Liquid Lipstick, “Trust Issues”
This dusty purple shade is perfect if you don’t want to go too dark, but just enough to still make a statement. The ABH Liquid Matte formula also has one of the best staying powers—this stuff doesn’t move. That being said, it can be a bit drying. Too keep your lips moisturized, make sure to apply plenty of chapstick or lip balm prior to lip lining and applying the actual lipstick.
2. Maybelline Color Sensational Loaded Bold Lipstick, “Chocoholic”
A shade that perfectly matches its name. This chocolate brown, traditional bullet lipstick has a demi-matte formula that is both long lasting and non-drying. Even better, it’s less then $10!
3. MAC Matte Lipstick, “Smoked Purple”
This smoky eggplant shade is so unique, I knew I had to buy it when I tried it out for the first time back in college. This lip pairs great with a simple eye look and bold, black lashes.
4. Anastasia Beverly Hills Matte Lipstick, “Brandy”
Perfect for holiday parties or Christmas Eve, this deep burgundy looks so timeless with any look. This matte bullet lipstick is VERY matte, which means it can be a little tricky to work with. Make sure to use chapstick prior to application or exfoliate with a lip scrub—here’s one of my favorites.
5. Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Mattes Lip Color, “Burgundy Blush”
I get so many questions about this lipstick when I wear it! Another great one for the holidays, this dark red is gorgeous and extremely velvety. This incredible matte formula also allows you to eat, drink and be merry comfortably with no smudging or flaking.
6. Anastasia Beverly Hills Matte Liquid Lipstick, “Potion”
For those who are looking to be a little bit more daring in their makeup routine, look no further. This super deep purple, almost midnight, shade is sure to turn heads. I love this pick for a New Year’s Eve look or, if you’re like me, a Tuesday.
Pro Tip: While I have worn all of the above lipsticks on their own just fine, here’s my insider tip on darker lipsticks, liquid or bullet formula: since you’re going to be putting something so intense on a focal point of your face, mistakes and unevenness can be seen more easily. Too avoid any color bleeding or smudging, I recommend using a lip liner on just the outside of your lips or all over as a base for your lipstick. This will create a better canvas and boundary for your lipstick—try this.
